Unable to get Ubuntu 11.10 login sounds(Fix)

Hello folks,

I am having windows xp. I just downloaded the ubuntu 11.10 and installed seperately on the HD. Guess what happened. It won't play login/startup sounds. Don't know what happened. As a newbie i started searching over. As i read the problem is the wrong file placement or we can say wrong configuration of file paths. At last i found the fix. Just followed the following steps.
1. Tried to play the login sound manually (use the following command)

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"

, the following message was displayed in the terminal window:
Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap"
Failed to play sound: File or data not found
To clear the Gtk-WARNING message and the login sound (drums), I performed the following steps:

2.    sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf
This cleared the Gtk-WARNING
3. So now copy the sound files in (/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/) to the sounds folder. use the following command.
sudo cp /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/* /usr/share/sounds/*

(Also if you copy into the unnecessary folder you can remove the files using the following command)
To remove/ delete files using commands in linux/unix (ofcourse ubuntu)
use remove(rm
ex. to remove everything from share folder type:

rm /usr/share/*.*
It worked for me. Hope it works for you people too.

  1. Thanks for posting this fix, although, I think the copy command should be:

    sudo cp /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/*.ogg /usr/share/sounds/

    1. Got it! I'll correct that one...
      Thanks for the correction....
